Do you need to file?
Most employees in Japan do not file. The year-end adjustment (nenmatsu chosei) at work settles their tax. You usually need a final tax return (kakutei shinkoku) if one of these applies:
- Your salary is more than ¥20 million a year.
- You have one employer, and your income other than salary is more than ¥200,000.
- You have two or more employers, and your other pay and other income total more than ¥200,000.
- You received RSUs, stock options or other pay that is not on your withholding slip (gensen choshuhyo).
- You made a gain on shares sold through an overseas broker, or through an account that does not settle tax for you. For employees, the ¥200,000 test above still applies.
- You are self-employed, and your income is more than your deductions.
- You rent out or sold property in Japan, even if you live abroad. For employees, the ¥200,000 test above still applies.
- You are leaving Japan, and one of the points above applies to you.
These are the main cases, not a full list. You can also file to claim a refund, for example if you left a job mid-year or had large medical costs.
The filing period is February 16 to March 15, 2027. Tax is due by March 15, 2027. A refund return can be filed for five years from January 1 of the following year.

Why we work by email
A tax return is written work. We built this service around that fact.
Everything stays in writing.
Every question, document request and decision stays in your inbox.
Any time zone.
Reply from London, Sydney or San Francisco whenever suits you. There is no meeting to schedule.
Read at your own pace.
Reread an explanation, look up a term, or forward it to your spouse, HR or home-country accountant.
You can check our English.
The Japanese original sits under the English in every email, so a Japanese-speaking colleague or your own translator can compare them.

We aim to reply within two business days, Japan time.
What it costs
These are the fees for our English-language service. Your fee depends on your income and documents, not your nationality.
| Example | Fee |
|---|---|
| Minimum fee, such as salary only | ¥97,500¥107,250 with tax |
| Salary and ¥10 million of RSU income | ¥135,000¥148,500 with tax |
| Salary, ¥10 million of RSU income, and shares sold through an overseas broker | ¥178,500¥196,350 with tax |
| Salary and ¥10 million of overseas income | ¥129,000¥141,900 with tax |
| Business with ¥5 million in sales | ¥121,500¥133,650 with tax |
| Living overseas, ¥3 million of rent from one property | ¥100,500¥110,550 with tax |
| Living overseas, property sold for ¥50 million | ¥195,000¥214,500 with tax |
Your fee depends on your documents. Consumption tax is included in the second figure. These fees are for your return only. If we act as your tax agent, that fee is ¥60,000 per year (¥66,000 with consumption tax). We confirm your fee by email after we review your documents. If an extra fee is needed, we explain it first. These are regular fees. If you apply by December 31, 2026, you get 10% off, down to the minimum fee.

Frequently asked questions
Are you an English-speaking tax accountant?
No. Our tax accountant is a licensed Japanese CPA and tax accountant who does not speak English. All of our work with you is done in written English by email.
What if I would rather talk to someone?
Then we are not the right fit, and a firm that offers calls will serve you better.
What language is my tax return in?
The return filed with the National Tax Agency is a Japanese document. We send you a written English summary before filing so that you can approve it.
If the English and Japanese differ, which one applies?
The Japanese original applies.
Why is the fee different from your Japanese page?
The English fee includes written English correspondence.
Do you prepare US or other foreign tax returns?
No. We handle Japanese tax only.
What are the common mistakes, and what can I do myself?
Common mistakes include relying only on the year-end adjustment, treating withheld tax as final, and deciding your tax status by counting 183 days. Another is confusing non-permanent resident, which is a tax status, with the permanent resident visa.
You can collect your documents and check the list on this page yourself. You need a professional when your tax status is unclear, you have income in several countries, or you want a special rule.
Can my tax filing affect my visa?
It can be relevant. Japan's immigration guidelines look at whether tax obligations are met when visa renewals and permanent residency are reviewed. Filing on time matters, but a tax return does not guarantee any result. We do not give views on immigration outcomes, and we do not prepare immigration documents.
